Description
As part of the World Expo in Osaka, the European Union Pavilion invited Knotto to curate an open-call throughout Europe. Following this competition, five national artists, designers and craftsmen were selected for a one-month residency in Japan during the World Expo. Each of the participants will work in close collaboration with a Japanese craftsman, with the aim of producing a joint research project rooted in our different cultures. The 5 selected European residents accompanied by their respective Japanese craftsm(wo)men and artists, will present the results of their residencies in Kyoto at the Bridge Studio gallery. The video will be screened in the EU Pavilion as well.
The residency takes place all over Japan:
- WATARAI TORU x ELIZA MARA KAMRADZE TUTERE: A collaboration between a Japanese ikebana artist and a Latvian contemporary embroiderer.UEHARA MICHIKO x NAIRI KHATCHADOURIAN
Location: Kamakura - KATO TSUYOSHI x LAURA LUCHTMAN: A collaboration between a Japanese flags & textiles studio and a Dutch textile designer.
Location: Kyoto - ISHIGASHIRA ETSU x MATTHIAS WINKLER: A collaboration between a sakiori craftswoman and an Austrian artisanal shoemaker
Location: Morioka - UEHARA MICHIKO x NAIRI KHATCHADOURIAN: A collaboration between a Japanese silkweaving craftswoman and an Armenian researcher and curator.
Location: Naha, Okinawa - KYOZO SHIMOGAWA x STEFAN KARTCHEV: A collaboration between a Japanese kurume kasuri craftsman and a Bulgarian fashion designer.
